Braces for Greenville Families, 15 Minutes Up Putnam Pike
Greenville and Chepachet share a road. Our office at 1109 Putnam Pike is about 8 miles west of Greenville center along US-44, a drive of roughly 15 minutes through the village of Harmony. For teens with an after-school adjustment or adults heading in before work, that is about as easy as an orthodontic commute gets.
This page is about what having braces is actually like, from the day they go on to the day they come off. If you are still choosing between treatments, start with a free consultation and Dr. Kirsten Romani will tell you whether braces, aligners or simply waiting is the right call.
Braces Day: What Happens
After your free first visit and a treatment plan you have agreed to, braces go on at a dedicated appointment. Placing brackets does not hurt. The teeth are cleaned and prepared, each bracket is bonded in its planned position, and the archwire is connected. Before you leave, our team shows you how to brush around the brackets and how to use orthodontic wax.
Greenville patients can choose MicroArch Braces®, a low-profile metal option, or Clarity Advanced® Ceramic Braces, which are tooth colored. Younger kids can pick WildSmiles® shapes. See them all on the types of braces page.
The First Two Weeks
Teeth are usually tender for the first few days, especially when biting. A warm saltwater rinse, one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water, helps, as does whatever pain reliever you normally take for a headache. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to toughen up against the brackets, and wax over any rubbing spot makes a big difference. By the third week most patients barely think about their braces.
Eating, Brushing and Sports
Hard, sticky and chewy foods are the main things to avoid, since they bend wires and pop brackets. Brush twice a day and floss often, taking extra care along the gumline and around each bracket, where food tends to collect. Keep your six-month cleanings with your general dentist.
Greenville teens who play sports should wear a mouthguard for practice and games. It cushions the lips against the brackets and protects the braces from a hit. Musicians can keep playing too. There is a short adjustment period, and brace covers can help with wind instruments. Our braces for teens page has more on school-year life in braces.
Adjustment Visits and Problems Between Them
You will see us every 8 to 10 weeks for adjustments that take about 20 to 40 minutes, with reminders by text or email. True orthodontic emergencies are rare. A loose bracket still attached to the wire can usually wait for a planned visit with wax on it, and a poking wire can often be pushed down with a pencil eraser. If you are in severe pain or a wire comes out entirely, call and we will schedule a repair. Our emergency care page lists each fix.
Adults in Braces
Braces are not just for kids. Adults often choose them to correct crowding that never got treated or teeth that moved after an injury. Ceramic brackets are a popular choice for adults who want something less noticeable. If you would rather avoid brackets entirely, our Invisalign treatment in Greenville page explains the clear aligner route.
Why Straight Teeth Matter Beyond Looks
A nicer smile is the obvious result, but the practical gains are just as real. Teeth that line up properly are easier to brush and floss, so plaque has fewer places to hide. A corrected bite spreads chewing forces more evenly, which reduces uneven wear over the years. Front teeth that stick out are more likely to be chipped in a fall or a game, and pulling them back lowers that risk. Crowding and bite problems can also make chewing or certain sounds harder than they should be.
For teens there is a confidence piece too, since treatment can ease self-consciousness during years when appearance feels like a big deal. Our orthodontic FAQ goes deeper into the benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I wear braces?
Most of our patients are in braces for one to two years. More complex bites take longer, and missed appointments or broken brackets can slow things down.
What happens when braces come off?
Retainers hold your new smile in place. Teeth tend to shift over time, so wearing retainers as directed is a long-term part of keeping the result.
Do I need a referral to get braces?
No. Call us directly to book the free first visit.
How much do braces cost?
The fee depends on your treatment plan and is reviewed with you before anything starts. We help with insurance, offer payment plans and give a discount for payment in full.
